There’s nothing quite as exciting as shopping for toddlers for Christmas. For 12 to 18-month-olds, this is usually their first Christmas where they’re slightly more aware of what’s going on - which makes gifting exciting items more fun than ever! But with so many great gifts out there, what things should you consider when Christmas shopping for a toddler? Stick around for everything you need to know.
The last thing you want to do when shopping for a toddler at Christmas is to give them something that isn’t safe. It’s incredibly important to always review each gift ahead of time and make sure the age recommendation applies to the toddler you’re shopping for. While it may seem like some toys are over the top when it comes to their age requirements, remember that they exist for a reason. There are plenty of horror stories of seemingly innocent gifts causing unthinkable situations. Give yourself peace of mind and always stick to important safety rules.
If you’re shopping for your own children, you’ll probably have a good idea of the types of gifts you can afford or have room for. If you’re shopping for somebody else’s child, it’s important to check with their parents ahead of time if you’re planning on making a large purchase. Unless the parents give you the go-ahead, leave special presents up to the parents to gift their kiddos. These include things like doll houses, bicycles, etc. There’s nothing worse than upstaging parents during Christmas - err on the side of caution and stick to gifts that haven’t already been claimed by parents and grandparents.
Everyone loves spoiling little ones with large gifts that they will love! But before you go ahead and purchase the biggest teddy bear out there, think about how much room their family home has. If you’re shopping for a child who comes from a small home, it’s best to avoid large gifts that their parents don’t have room for. If they have a large house with plenty of storage, then sizing isn’t an issue!
Nearly every adult out there has been shocked to find out just how expensive some toddler Christmas gifts are. While it may seem like you have to fork out the cash in order to find a great gift, this couldn’t be further from the truth! There are lots of great gifts out there at various price points. Don’t put yourself in an uncomfortable situation by buying a gift you can’t afford. The truth is, the toddler you’re buying for will probably lose interest in it after a couple of months. Save your money for when they’re older!
Little ones between 12 months and 18 months old love to explore. It’s such an exciting age for children as they learn to walk, talk and find out more about the world. It’s also an age where they start displaying what they’re interested in. Think about if the toddler you’re buying for is interested in things like toys with buttons, drawing, stuffed animals, etc! Kids have different personalities and steer towards different things. If in doubt, ask their parents for suggestions.
The truth is, shopping for a 12 to 18-month-old is an entirely different story than shopping for a 7 to 8-year-old. Little toddlers may not understand what Christmas is yet and there’s a strong chance that the gift you purchase will be forgotten about within a month. That’s just the way it goes with little ones! If the toddler you’re shopping for has every toy under the sun, think about other things they could need. Maybe this is a small slide to enjoy during the summer months or a nice winter jacket to keep them warm during the winter. Every kiddo needs something different!
If you’re on the hunt for the perfect gift for a toddler this Christmas, make sure you keep the above in mind. With these careful considerations, you’ll end up finding a great gift in no time. Happy shopping!
